Understanding Residential Pool Safety Risks:

Swimming is a great way to stay active and have fun, but if you own a residential pool, there are certain risks to be aware of - from accidental drownings to slips and falls. Learn the key safety protocols to ensure your family can enjoy the pool safely and without worry.

Regularly Check the Overall Well-being of Your Pool System

In order to reduce the chances of a dangerous accident, homeowners should regularly inspect their pool system for any signs of wear and tear. Drain pipes, skimmers, heaters or pumps should all be checked for proper connections and maintenance. If any part is not working correctly, it’s important to call an experienced pool technician as soon as possible in order to avoid potential hazards. Additionally, it's important to clean the pool and its components on a regular basis.

Ensure Adequate Swimming Supervision is in Place at All Times

Homeowners should always have an adult supervising the pool area when children or inexperienced swimmers are nearby. Even if lifeguards and certified professionals are watching, making sure someone is paying attention at all times will help minimize pool safety problems. Pool owners should also try to maintain a close eye on anyone who has consumed alcohol before entering the water. The Swim Safe America website recommends that children do not swim without being accompanied by another adult and non-swimmer should use approved flotation devices at all times.

Be Mindful of Electrical Hazards Around Your Pool.

Water and electricity is never a good mix when it comes to safety, so it's important to be aware of all electrical hazards near your pool. Pool pumps, heaters and filters should all use ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets for extra protection. It's also a good idea to have an electrician check the pool area for any faulty wiring or connections. For added security, some homeowners may opt to install surge protectors on their outdoor electrical systems.

Invest in a Pool Fence.

A pool fence is one of the best ways to keep your loved ones safe when swimming in a residential pool. The purpose of this is to create a barrier in between the pool and the surrounding environment, isolating it and preventing accidental drownings or falls. Pool fencing should be at least four feet above ground level and can use any material, such as vinyl, wrought iron, or even stones. Make sure your fence includes an opening that requires a key or code combination for access.
